Senior Astronomer at the European Southern Observatory. He was born in Athens, Greece on the 27th of January, 1964. He reeived the B.Sc. Honours in Physics (1986) from the Imperial College of Science and Technology of the London University, and the Ph.D. in Astrophysics (1989) also from Imperial. He worked at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO), Australia first as Research Fellow (1989-91) and later as a staff Astronomer.There he was instrument scientist for the Echelle spectrographs and infrared instrumentation. At ESO he led the NTT refurbishment effort and later headed the commissioning of the VLT at Paranal. He has been director of the La Silla Paranal observatory and also led the E-ELT project office at ESO. His scientific interests are centered on the Supernovae and their physics. He is a fellow of the RAS, fellow of the astronomical Society of Australia and a member of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.).
