He was born in Saint Louis, and he always loved and respected his Greek Heritage (Karpathos island). He received his B.Sc. degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of California in Berkeley. After graduating, he returned to Washington and participated in a project measuring the Earth’s rotation. He joined the Naval Observatory team in 1990, and seven years later, he became director of the Time Service Department. His scientific interests include also Radio Astronomy and Planetary Sciences. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and of the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.).
